Built right on top of a cliff, construction began here in the 9th century. Since then, the church has witnessed the invasions of Seljuks, Mongolians, Persians and Turks. The defensive walls you see surrounding the church were constructed in the 14th century. Left battered throughout history, the church was heavily restored in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries.
