Tatev Monastery is the main reason domestic and international tourists make their way up the winding valleys that lead to Tatev. Built right on top of a cliff, construction began here in the 9th century. Since then, the church has witnessed the invasions of Seljuks, Mongolians, Persians and Turks. The defensive walls you see surrounding the church were constructed in the 14th century. Left battered throughout history, the church was heavily restored in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries.

Bed and Breakfast homestays are sprinkled around the tiny village for those who decide to linger. Village life remains slow around here where you're more likely to run into a herd of sheep instead of people. Plenty of hiking opportunities abound here but many trails are abandoned or unmarked making a simple day trek a little more adventerous.
